Macrocycle are molecular structure that have large holes in the middle, like a wedding ring. Like a ring fits a finger, a “guest” molecule can fill the hole and be held there by molecular forces. These guests that have complimentary size, shape, and the chemical nature to the macrocyclic “host”. Such structures have applications in chemical detection, catalysis and facilitating the movement of molecules across membranes. This work presents the successful synthesis and characterisation of a novel macrocycle. Investigations into the host-guest chemistry were carried out, using a variety of guests. Data obtained through a variety of characterisation techniques infers the ingression of these guest molecules.
