Background + problem: Many of the platforms and programmes we use on a daily basis enable our digitally improved lifestyles (virtual assistants, search engines, translation tools, spell-checkers, language learning tools, etc) and are supported by language technology. However, our phones and computers are often ill equipped to deal with the Irish since there isn’t enough Irish language technology available. Consequently, Irish speakers frequently have to switch to English. The probability of digital extinction, or the eventual drop in language use due to a lack of technical support, is greatly influenced by this language switch. If Gaeilgeoirí must exist in this separate and detached way, then our efforts to promote Irish use by increasing the number of speakers alone will be ineffective.
Aims: Therefore, eSTÓR aims to source and curate high-quality Irish language data, in order to help bridge this digital gap by enabling research and development of Irish language technology.
Methods: We are doing this by facilitating the collection of bilingual Irish language data through a central national repository. The datasets created by automated processing tools within the website can be used by translators who use Computed Aided Translation (CAT)software. Outreach campaigns to encourage the sharing of bilingual datasets and the digitisation of hardcopy documentation will increase the amount of Irish language data available to facilitate the development of technology for the language.
Results: High-quality datasets in various domains are available on the eSTÓR website for translators and researchers.

Dá chuirfí an t-ualach seo ar Ghaeilgeoirí, le bheith ar theicneolaíocht sa chaoi scartha agus scoite seo, beidh ár n-iarrachtaí le Gaeilge a chur chun cinn, díreach trí chainteoirí a mhéadú, gan éifeacht.

Spreagann feachtais for-rochtana roinnt tacair shonraí dátheangacha agus méadóidh an digitiú de cháipéisí cruachóipe méid shonraí na Gaeilge ar fáil le forbairt theicneolaíocht na teanga a éascú.
